WHAT DOES ST JOHN ASK FROM ITS VOLUNTEERS?

Commitment is an important component of your involvement with St. John Ambulance - you being the greatest beneficiary. Please look over the requirements of a "Regular Member" in the Division. If you continue, you will be required to complete the following each year:

If you feel you can meet these basic requirements you should next check your eligiblity:

AM I ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?

You must meet all of the following criteria before being able to join St. John as a full member.

HOW DO I JOIN?

If you do not have the required first aid courses or are not sure, please contact our branch office (250) 388-5505 to clarify or to book the required course. If you would like to get a taste before obtaining a first aid course, please feel free to attend a training meeting.

Once you are qualified please bring your certification and two pieces of photo-id to a training meeting.

All training meetings are held at the Branch Office 941 Pandora Ave. from 7 - 9pm on Monday nights. Please ensure that there is a training meeting on the date you intend to come by consulting our training schedule.

WHAT IS THE PROBATIONARY PROGRAM?

A fter you attend the training meeting you have the option to enter the Probationary Program. This is a new program implemented September 1st 2000 designed to help you move through the program as quickly and painlessly as possible. The program consists of three components.

1.

Administrative - following the training meeting you can pick up an application package which further explains the entire process. You must complete three forms (application, criminal record check, and waiver of liability), as well as provide proof of your first aid certification and two pieces of photo-id.

2. Interview - once phase 1 is complete you are able to arrange an interview. Interviews are not a "pass or fail" event. They are designed to allow the interviewer to get to know you and allow you an opportunity to discuss anything you wish to regarding St John. You will most likely be asked to demonstrate your first aid skills in a brief scenario to allow the interviewer to get an idea of where you should be placed in the third phase

3. Duties - you are required to complete five duties before being eligible for promotion to full member. In this phase you are treated as a regular member on a public duty, but you have the opportunity to practise under the guidance of a preceptor who can assess your skills and help you with any questions or skills.

Once you have completed these components, your file will be reviewed by the senior staff of the division who will qualify you for promotion to full member.
